Which Martial Art is Most Effective: Judo, Sambo, or BJJ?

Somebody asked this question on Quora, and I answered it like this:

The most relevant comparison of these great martial arts is to relate them to your own specific goals. Are you trying to select one style in order to devote yourself to training? If so, are you training to win competitions, or defend yourself in an unanticipated street altercation? Or is it a conceptual, intellectual analysis of these arts?

Each of these systems have extensive sportive applications for all sizes, ages, and levels of experience. You can train to compete and win all kinds of medals, trophies, and belts. With a competition mindset, you can experience gains in strength, endurance, and positive changes to your body composition.

Each of these arts also have combative applications, and depending on the particular local school you choose, you can learn to effectively survive a street fight against a single opponent. Even though, strictly speaking, Judo and Sambo are sports, there exists many Combat Judo, or Combat Sambo, etc., which will prepare you to defend yourself. As for BJJ, Helio Gracie, a co-founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, designed his style of Jiu Jitsu for the purpose of self-defense.

No matter what conclusion you make about these styles in general, it is the specific school you train in, and the quality of the instruction, and your peers in that school which will determine your actual effectiveness. Bad versions of any those aspects, no matter what the style is, will limit your effectiveness. And of course, the level of dedication you want to apply to your own development is the remaining factor.

If you’re just trying to make an objective, qualitative analysis, it’s hardly useful to compare. There are super effective practitioners in each art that show this. Bruce Lee said, “Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system.”

A good line of inquiry might be, “Which of these arts would best enable me to fulfill my personal goals and is there a good school nearby where I can train consistently in?”

Some Philosophy about Leadership

To add to the previous post,...
The primary attribute that is needed to accomplish the goal of creating a solid business from scratch is the entrepreneur's mastery over herself. A boss who is self-aware of her capabilities, weaknesses, and foibles. She is aware of how others perceive her and has full control over that image in the way she looks, talks, and moves. She is fully conscious of how her core beliefs and values affect those around her. She doesn't compromise, she communicates and integrates ideas. She doesn't manipulate; she leads and coordinates. Above all, she must remain mindful of the core beliefs and values, and keep faith with them. Otherwise, she will become a self-serving tyrant. Unfortunately, employees are very sensitive to this possibility; in fact, they are predisposed to thinking it will happen. Once the trust between employee and employer is broken, it is the beginning of the end of the company.
This loose framework allows for a variety of decision-making processes, but a leader must adopt one that he uses consistently. He must be objective and process oriented. The idea that the boss is arbitrary, mercurial, and unreasonably biased is a cancer to any organization. The boss must be so logical, he is predictable in how he makes decisions, distributes rewards, and metes out punishment.
This is why hiring is so important. The group of people a boss employs to assist him in the achievement of the company's goals must understand and accept the core values of the company and must commit to help achieve the firm's objectives, near-term and long-term. It would be best if the candidate for employment already had the core beliefs and values because some of these may be difficult to train or teach. The key to inculcating this type of culture is how a chief executive engenders trust among his staff. The staff must trust the chief has the best interests of the company, and by extension, its employees, at heart. Without that trust, the company will begin its slow slide into corruption and decay.
How does a boss engender trust? He must be clear in his communication. He must be transparent about what he is doing. He must be careful about the commitments he makes (even to the most junior employee) because he must faithfully keep those promises.

A Description of the Company

In thinking about creating a business, I believe it necessary to take stock of one's personal values and beliefs first. A kind of ethical template will guide all your decisions and will communicate to yourself, your partners, your investors, and your employees the idea that you're grounded, coherent, and congruent. It is a way to tame the ego. These adjectives describe people who are more organized, more focused, and clearer in their vision of ultimate success. They are less stressed, less defensive and combative, and less prone to emotional breakdowns.

My ultimate goal is to create a profitable and enduring business based on my creativity, discipline, and quality of work. This company will produce excellent products in an ethical way. The firm will be run with integrity and compassion. Integrity meaning an unwavering commitment to truth and honesty. The truth meaning the absolute truth as revealed by God, the Father Almighty, and his Son, Jesus Christ. And by compassion, I mean a passion for quality and excellence that is shared by the community within the company. If you commit to the integrity mandate of the company, you will automatically adopt the compassion for your fellow man that is necessary for the effective and efficient functioning of the company.
